NCAA
The College Football Playoff era began with the 2014 season. For the first decade, four teams were selected to the Playoff field, with two semifinal games and a national championship game. But now we're in the 12-team era. Here's how the bracketing and CFP works:

12 teams will be selected to the Playoff field, with the selection committee's five highest-ranked conference champions earning automatic bids. These five highest-ranked conference champions are in regardless of where they rank in the top 25, even if they're not in it

This was seen in the first CFP rankings in 2025, when Memphis wasn't ranked in the top 25 but received a projected automatic bid as the fifth highest-ranked conference champion

The four highest-ranked teams regardless of conference champion status will receive the top four seeds in the playoff and a first-round bye.

In the inaugural 12-team playoff in 2024, the four highest-ranked conference champions were seeded 1-4 and each will received a first-round bye

Teams seeded 5-12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team

The quarterfinals and semifinals rotate among six bowls: Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar. Both semifinals will be played around the New Year's holiday with the national title game on a Monday night at least a week later. See the CFP schedule below for the first two years.

SOS kept Boise out. They moved to have a chance. It will be the decider.

NDSU in the MWC will rarely/never have a superior SOS to a bubble P5. If NDSU doesn’t languish like so many FCS move ups have SOS will be a roadblock to the CFP.

I’m not convinced the reality of the FBS move would match the dream.

When NDSU moved from D2 they looked like an FCS institution measured by enrollment, academics and athletic budgets. They still do. Times change though. They may one day grow into FBS.
  • Median academic spending MWC 591.35 million NDSU 392.03
  • Football budget MWC median 21.2 million. NDSU 6.53 million.
  • Average MWC enrollment ~25,000. NDSU 10,096. Air Force would be smaller @ ~4,500

NDSU might get an invite someday. They and several others have been mentioned by name. I. Don’t know if a competitive Oregon game helps? A good program doesn’t seem to be particularly welcome and NDSU should be in no hurry to move up on the cheap. They would be among the smallest if they moved now.

Somewhere between hiring Klieman etc and winning the CFP lies the future. I don’t think the future has arrived yet tho

Maybe instead of the Klieman deal, the MWC should just make a new division. This would make it the G6, give the media more competitive games in the middle tier and open up the untapped 3 state market, CA &Texas eyeballs too.. Until then 10-15 million for starters bro

AI CONDENSED PAGE SUMMARY
There are two dick sizes. Doctors believe it’s the one in your hand Psychiatrists believe it’s the one in your head. Some NDSU fans believe NDSU has the money for FBS
A surprising answer to the question “can NDSU afford moving football to FBS?”

Unless they have a hidden money tree ready to blossom NDSUs budget is maxed. They need growth but they are trying to stabilize a shrinking enrollment.

They need 6 million or so just to get to where NIU was in the MAC.

They have done a good job of hiding it if the have the money ready to go year-after-year-after-year.

Realistically the Bison aren’t going anywhere and shouldn’t until they can demonstrate they have the money for a basic competitive FBS program and receive a material offer. Their current position is valuable.

Rather than the standard Drugs are not your friend type answer, I presented a factual rebuttal to what is, I believe, at this time an unrealistic and on-going proposition. Montana has been in the same situation for much longer. They have been wise and provide a good model and lead to follow.

Ndsu has to talk about football moving FBS.. because their enrollment has gotten so low pretty soon they are going to have to drop back to D2. They do a great job fundraising and a poor job updating campus and recruiting students that actually want their majors.

The Dakotas and Montanas need to stick together to keep football relevant up here and it would be nice if all of the mid teams that moved up over the last 10 years moved back down or we all moved up to make a great FCS again.. we could call its Division 1 AA..

i hate the idea of moving up to fbs.. I hate the idea of not playing our regional rivals more
